Which Bugaboo Car Seat Adapter Do You Need? (By Stroller Model)

There is no single “Bugaboo car seat adapter.” Each Bugaboo stroller has its own adapter, and — at least in the US — they all connect the same family of infant car seats: Maxi-Cosi, Nuna, Cybex, BeSafe, Clek Liing, and Bugaboo’s own Turtle. So the adapter you need is decided by your stroller, not your car seat. Below is exactly which adapter to buy for each Bugaboo, which seats click on, and which popular US seats (Graco, Chicco) have no official option at all.

The short answer: match the adapter to your stroller

Two things decide the adapter you need: (1) your exact Bugaboo model, and (2) whether your infant seat belongs to the “Maxi-Cosi” click-on family. The first one matters most, because Bugaboo sells a separate adapter for each stroller. A Fox adapter will not fit a Dragonfly, and a Donkey adapter will not fit a Butterfly — the arms are shaped to each frame’s receivers. Buy the adapter named for your stroller, then confirm your car seat is on that adapter’s compatibility list.

Every pairing gets one of three verdicts: Fits the seat clicks directly onto the stroller frame, no adapter · Adapter compatible with the named adapter part · No fit not supported by the manufacturer.

Which Bugaboo adapter for which stroller

Every current Bugaboo stroller uses a click-and-go car seat adapter sold separately. Here is the adapter to buy for each, and the infant-seat family it connects. All of these are Bugaboo’s “for Maxi-Cosi® car seats” adapters — which, despite the name, cover several brands (see the next table).

Which infant car seats actually click on (US market)

Bugaboo’s adapters are named “for Maxi-Cosi car seats,” but the real rule is the mounting bar: Bugaboo supports the group of infant seats that share the Maxi-Cosi / i-Size style mount. In the US that means Maxi-Cosi, Nuna, Cybex, BeSafe, Clek Liing — and Bugaboo’s own Turtle. Seats built on a different mount (Graco, Chicco, US Britax) are not on any Bugaboo adapter list, so there is no official way to click them on.

Bugaboo’s own Turtle seat still needs an adapter

This surprises a lot of buyers: even the Bugaboo Turtle (Turtle by Nuna, Turtle One, Turtle Air, Turtle Air Shield) — Bugaboo’s own infant car seat, built for it by Nuna — does not click bare onto a Bugaboo frame. It attaches with the same Maxi-Cosi adapter as every other seat, and the Turtle is listed right alongside them on Bugaboo’s adapter pages. So if you’re buying the matching Bugaboo seat expecting it to drop straight on, budget for the adapter too.

The one exception — and the seats with no option

The Fox line has one adapter outside the Maxi-Cosi family: a separate Fox adapter for Peg Perego car seats (frequently out of stock). Apart from that, every Bugaboo car seat adapter serves the Maxi-Cosi / i-Size group.

If you own a Graco SnugRide, Chicco KeyFit, or US Britax B-Safe, there is no official Bugaboo adapter for it. Don’t try to force it on with a third-party “universal” bracket — a car seat that isn’t locked to a tested mount is a safety issue, not a convenience trade-off. Your realistic options are:

  • Use that car seat with its own base in the car, and use the Bugaboo’s bassinet or seat for the stroller (no click-on travel system).
  • Choose an infant seat from the Maxi-Cosi family (Maxi-Cosi, Nuna, Cybex, BeSafe, or the Bugaboo Turtle) if a click-on travel system is a must-have.

How to buy the exact part

  1. Pin down your stroller and its version (Fox 5 vs Fox 3, Butterfly vs Butterfly 2). The adapter is chosen by the model and generation.
  2. Buy the adapter named for that stroller — not “a Bugaboo adapter.” Each frame has its own part.
  3. Confirm your seat is on that adapter’s list on Bugaboo’s product page before you buy — sub-models matter (Pipa RX vs Pipa Lite).
  4. Check the lock. A correct adapter lets the seat click on with a firm, definite lock and the seat can’t lift off. If it takes force, stop — it’s the wrong part.

For the general rules behind all of this — adapter types, how to read a compatibility chart, and why “universal” adapters are risky — see our guide to car seat adapters for strollers and the complete compatibility guide.

Confirm before you buy. Compatibility and adapter part numbers change with model-years, and a wrong adapter is a safety issue.
